Buona Sera! We returned on Monday night from a long weekend in Italy! It was amazing. We arrived on Thursday evening and found our way to Campo di Fiori. We ended up renting a little apartment rather than a hotel. It was very cute - just one bedroom with a bathroom. It was perfect with one exception - NO HOT WATER. I was unpleasantly surprised when jumping into the shower to discover that it was not even moderately warm! Friday we met my friend Elizabeth and her husband at their hotel for breakfast. They were in Rome for a couple of days with about 6 other couples before going on a Mediterranean cruise. We ate in the rooftop restaurant and had a view of the city. We walked around the Trevii Fountain and threw in a couple of coins to guarantee our return to Rome someday! We spent the afternoon in Vatican City wandering through the Museaum, St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel.
We actually had a guide which was wonderful because she was able to talk to us about the history of it all. It was so interesting. St. Peter's was absolutely breathtaking! After the Vatican we wandered through the narrow, cobblestone streets through several Piazzas (town square areas) and to the Pantheon. Saturday we got up and met the group and spent the day walking through the old ruins of temples and basilicas in the Roman Forum and Palatine and went to the Colosseum. Sunday we thought we would take a train to Naples which is just an hour away.
It is right on the coast and the view of that was beautiful, but the rest of the city was very dirty, crowded and unpleasant. We couldn't get back to Rome fast enough! We did, however, have the best pizza I've ever had - pizza originated in Naples and it was great! Monday we spent the day walking around Borghese Park and some other areas of the city. It was a great trip! It was about 95 and very humid everyday! The people were nice and the food was great! We had been warned about a lot of pick pocketing and crime, but didn't have any problems at all! We got home around midnight on Monday night exhausted and very sore/tired from SO much walking!
